Why the plan name matters when checking benefits
Morris County families often want to know whether NJ FamilyCare will pay for treatment. The answer involves three details: your managed care organization, the level of care, and the facility's network status. This guide explains what to check and which organizations can confirm it.
Our role is independent information and referrals, not insurance or treatment. Confirm personal benefits with your managed care plan and NJ FamilyCare; we can direct you to those sources rather than estimate coverage.
Applying before choosing a plan
Household income and size help determine NJ FamilyCare eligibility. New Jersey's Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion extended access to more low-income adults. Apply year-round at njfamilycare.org, by calling 1-800-701-0710, or at a county welfare or social services office.
Approval leads to enrollment with one of five managed care organizations, selected by you or assigned. The organization affects which clinics, providers, and treatment facilities are available in-network, so the choice has practical consequences.
Understanding the five managed care organizations
The Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services lists Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Fidelis Care, Horizon NJ Health, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and Wellpoint as contracted plans. Each operates in every county, including Parsippany, Morristown, Denville, and other Morris County communities; members use the plan in which they enroll.
Older references to Amerigroup New Jersey mean the plan now called Wellpoint, following its January 1, 2024 name change. References naming WellCare of NJ as a current choice should be checked against official state information, which does not list it among these five plans.
Checking substance use benefits and network rules
NJ FamilyCare Medicaid includes substance use services ranging from detox to outpatient counseling and medication-assisted treatment. Each managed care organization establishes its own authorization, records, and network requirements. We cannot verify those requirements for an individual caller.
First, ask member services about the specific care being considered. Next, ask the facility whether it currently participates in your named plan, rather than whether it broadly accepts Medicaid. Written responses are especially helpful when a decision is urgent.
Steps after a coverage denial
A refused authorization, fewer approved days, or an early end to services can be challenged. Managed care members have a defined appeal process rather than having to accept the first denial.
- Submit an internal appeal to the plan within 60 calendar days from the denial letter's date.
- After an unsuccessful internal appeal, seek a state Medicaid Fair Hearing within 120 calendar days of that decision; an independent administrative law judge conducts the hearing.
- To request ongoing services during an appeal, ask within 10 calendar days of the denial letter or before the current authorization ends, using whichever deadline is later.
- Save correspondence and receipt dates, and ask facility billing staff to help document medical necessity when relevant.
Eligibility-related Fair Hearing requests may be sent to DMAHS Fair Hearing Unit, P.O. Box 712, Trenton, NJ 08625, or faxed to 609-588-2435. Read the plan's denial notice carefully for its appeal instructions and mailing details.
The limits of our information service
We do not submit enrollments, charge insurance plans, or confirm personal benefits. Both the policy's coverage and the facility's acceptance and charges need separate checks, preferably documented in writing.
Resolve conflicting answers from facilities and insurers before admission. Pressure to enroll immediately without time to check benefits is a reason to pause and request more information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Parsippany-area program take my NJ FamilyCare plan?
Check whether your particular plan covers the needed care and whether the facility currently belongs to its network. Ask the facility to name the NJ FamilyCare plans it works with rather than relying on a general Medicaid claim.
Which organizations manage NJ FamilyCare coverage?
The state's listing names Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Fidelis Care, Horizon NJ Health, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and Wellpoint, formerly Amerigroup New Jersey. Each serves every county, including Morris County.
What happened to Amerigroup New Jersey?
Its name changed to Wellpoint on January 1, 2024. The renamed organization remains among NJ FamilyCare's five managed care plans.
Where can I apply for NJ FamilyCare coverage?
Use njfamilycare.org, call 1-800-701-0710, or visit a county welfare or social services office. Applications are accepted throughout the year rather than during a single annual window.
How long do I have to challenge a rehab or detox denial?
The usual deadline for an internal appeal is 60 calendar days from the denial letter. After an unsuccessful internal appeal, the usual deadline for requesting a Medicaid Fair Hearing is 120 calendar days.
Can Parsippany Detox Assistance confirm my Medicaid benefits?
We cannot verify insurance or provide treatment. Our independent information and referral service can explain general steps, but only your plan and the facility can establish your actual coverage and acceptance.
