Choosing a Number for Immediate Help

For someone facing a substance-use crisis in Parsippany or elsewhere in Morris County, two numbers are the main starting points.

Call 911 if a person loses consciousness, has trouble breathing, experiences a seizure or chest pain, or becomes severely confused. Waiting at home with these symptoms may be unsafe.

Call or text 988 for an emotional or substance-use crisis that does not pose an immediate threat to life. The nationwide Suicide & Crisis Lifeline answers at every hour.

Other No-Cost Lines Available Day and Night

A specialized service may be useful in some circumstances. Every line below offers free support with staff available around the clock.

  • Veterans Crisis Line — call 988 and choose option 1 to reach support focused on veterans and military experiences.
  • Crisis Text Line — send HOME to 741741 to talk with a trained counselor through text messages.
  • ReachNJ — phone 844-732-2465 for New Jersey’s statewide addiction hotline and help locating treatment.
  • NJ Hopeline — New Jersey’s statewide suicide-prevention service, staffed by the NJ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
  • SAMHSA’s National Helpline — get confidential, no-cost information and treatment referrals in Spanish or English. (Third-party resource)

Hospital Emergency Departments Can Evaluate Urgent Concerns

Hospital emergency teams in Morris County can assess acute intoxication, signs of withdrawal, and possible overdose. They can also refer patients to county screening services for an assessment of further substance-use care.

Unsure whether to request an ambulance or travel to an emergency department? Describe the symptoms to a 911 dispatcher, who is trained to help with that decision.

The Limits of Our Information Line

Neither crisis-line services nor direct detox or treatment are provided by Parsippany Detox Assistance. Use the number on this website for ordinary information and referral conversations about treatment choices.

Our phone line cannot replace 911 or 988. If you call us while an emergency is happening, we will ask you to contact one of those services.

When You Are Unsure What to Do

Put immediate safety first: call 911 if you are uncertain that someone is physically safe.

For overwhelming emotions or substance-use concerns without a medical emergency, contact 988. You can begin in your own words; you do not need to prepare what to say.
